![]() Virtually enclosed by hills, the park's spectacular setting can also be a curse. Surprisingly, the popular kite hill at Gasworks Park, at the north end of Lake Union facing downtown, Capitol Hill and Queen Anne, didn't come highly recommended. So I asked three well-known fliers, Mark Reed of Seattle, Erv Crosby of Everett and George Peters of Shoreline, each of whom designs and builds kites, to show me their favorite kite-flying fields, the places that help minimize nature's obstacles while maximizing the fun factor. All of these can add up to headaches for people who want trouble-free kite flying. But the Seattle area, where kiting is popular, does have its capricious winds, a seemingly perpetual threat of rain and a shortage of wide-open spaces. None of these rules holds true all of the time, of course. The first law: The wind always comes up after you've disassembled your kite.Īnother: The only field available for flying is surrounded by blackberry bushes and an apple orchard.Īnd another: The best wind is always accompanied by rain. Water is warm, air is warm and it blows quite often.A list posted on the door to the back room at Four Winds Kite Shop in Everett, titled "Murphy's Law for Kite Flyers," pretty much sums up the foibles of practicing this theoretically laid-back pastime. ![]() The best sailing in the NorthWest is September thru December. The biggest drag is the walk over the tracks while carrying gear in 30 knots and totally exhausted. Big swell, nice sandy beach, some breakers in close (watch the fin). Richmond Beach absolutely rips and its 10 minutes from Everette. Posted: Sun 9:32 am Post subject: RE: Windsurfing in Washington State? Problem is the drive to the gorge and Oregon Coast is longer when you live up there, but you can still make short trips to lake Wenatchee when you just need a day fix in the 5.0-6.5 range, it is on Hwy 2 over the pass. Many fall/winter days in the 3.5-4.5 range, hope you have a flexible job:-) Seems that when the frontal winds come through, this place rips more often than not compared to other sites. I would head up closer to Kayak Point Park north of Everett. Posted: Sun 11:02 am Post subject: RE: Windsurfing in Washington State?Įverett, WA. Any of the points on the East side of the sound Alki, Shilshole, Richmond Beach and Kayak offer great sailing when the fall winds howl from the SE-SW. The East side of the island (the park by the light house) can be gnarly on an ebbing tide, use caution or you will know the meaning of the word straight. The most consistent fall spot is Marrowstone Island. I have surfed the world over and short of wave sailing, some of the best conditions can be found in Puget Sound. Posted: Tue 5:51 pm Post subject: RE: Windsurfing in Washington State? Not as good as the gorge, but 4.5-5.0 is not unheard of. Purdy gets good wind in the spring and fall. Posted: Wed 12:11 am Post subject: RE: Windsurfing in Washington State? i agree with the other Mike: spend your weekends in the Gorge ( it has been 3.5-5.0 the last 2 weekends) and if there is no wind it is still an incredible place.Įverett/Seattle is a great area for Kite surfing. i am in Seattle so do not know the everett area. you can short board on the Sound when storms come through, but they are unpredictable and can be short lived. We have lots of water here but not much wind. Posted: Mon 1:09 am Post subject: RE: Windsurfing in Washington State? Of course, they do check the forecasts first, but alse make their own judgement. Youre just 3.5 hours from the Gorge, and can just follow the line of boardheads down every Friday. Rent/buy on the south/east side of town and split for the continents best (?) sailing every weekend. ![]() Posted: Fri 4:56 pm Post subject: RE: Windsurfing in Washington State?
